You may have recently heard about the RSPCA’s call for animal welfare education in schools and the new Generation Kind Campaign.
We would like a society where no animal suffers unnecessarily and this starts with young people.
Evidence shows that young children are being exposed to horrific incidents of animal suffering online, in ways previous generations have simply not experienced. A recent report revealed the shocking fact that nearly a quarter of school children aged 10-18 have witnessed animal cruelty and neglect on social media.
Animals play a significant role in many aspects of children's lives.
How humans care for and consider the lives of animals is central to reducing levels of suffering - both deliberate and through lack of knowledge.
Unfortunately not all children have families and friends who set good examples about respecting the lives of animals and being kind to animals doesn’t always come naturally. When children learn about animal welfare, they're more likely to enjoy healthy relationships with animals and people throughout their lives. By developing young people’s knowledge about the sentience of animals, we can inspire the next generation of animal lovers, creating a future that is kinder to animals.
We have a team of education volunteers that visit schools in our area to deliver an engaging workshop on animal welfare, which has received excellent feedback.
If you know a school that would appreciate a visit from our education team or you would like to know more about becoming an education volunteer, please contact nic@rspca-yorkhome.org.uk
